This blog is truly in the beginning stages, and right now, there’s so much I’m trying to figure out. There’s the technical side of things (SEOs, jetpacks, frameworks, oh my!), and then there’s the personal side of things (are people that I know going to see this?!).
Something I need to wrap my head around is the fact that I am a writer. Whether I like it or not. For months, I’ve been contemplating this whole “blogging” thing, and it’s something that I’m really, truly excited to do. I love technology, I love being creative, so I thought blogging was a natural way of combing my two loves.
I kept reading about “writers who blog” but that didn’t sound like me. “I’m wanting to be a blogger,” I kept telling myself, “but I’m not a writer.” Wait a minute, what?! What exactly is a blog? WORDS! WRITING! POSTS! How can I blog if I’m not a writer?
That’s where my thinking needs to change. I had to start asking myself, “Why do you want to blog?” My answers varied from 1) wanting to keep up with new technology, 2) being part of this (extremely supportive!) online community of awesome people, 3) wanting to find a way to stay at home with my daughter (eventually), and 4) wanting to share my ideas with others. If I’m not a writer, I can’t share my ideas! That’s a problem!
I am a writer. I just don’t know it yet. I started to read a book by Jeff Goins, You Are A Writer (So Start Acting Like One), and in the first chapter, he urged me to write those words. I am a writer. So I did. And then I thought about it. Why am I so reluctant to consider myself a writer?? It doesn’t take a special license or degree to write. It takes ideas (I have those!), it takes practice (I can do that!), and it takes dedication (check!).
By thinking this through, I realize I can only be a writer once I tell myself I’m a writer. I think the reason I’m afraid to call myself a writer is because I’m not confident in my skills. Writers are people who write novels. Writers are published. Writers tell people that they are writers. Right? (Write?) 😉 No!! That’s not right! A writer is simply someone who puts words on a page. Pencil to paper. Fingers to keyboard. A writer is someone who takes ideas and shares them with others.
My dream of blogging is interwoven with my skills as a writer. So, in order to be a successful blogger, I have to believe in my ability to write. Pencils and Coffee Cups would not be possible otherwise.
I am a blogger. I am a writer.
